sony 'family studio' xv-t33f

picked up a sony 'family studio' xv-t33f this weekend.



got it home and realised it was missing the stylus pen. so no go on any lofi painting joy..... d'oh!

wonder if there's a way to improvise a pen? anyone know how these touch tablets work? simple pressure wont do it...

Isn't it going to want simple pressure on an area as big as the nib of the pen? If you use your finger or anything bigger than the pen it'll just get to much data and won't work.

that's just what i thought... but 've tried various size implements on it made of both plastic and metal but with no luck. nothing works. even tried using the battery operated stylus from a graphics tablet i have...

so it's either buggered or it uses some other system of detection... weird.

as you can see in the photo, there are various membrane buttons for colour and brush size at the top of the machine. these all work. it is just the main drawing area which wont respond.

on opening it up and unscrewing the front, the drawing area does seem a little different from the membrane buttons. it has a black layer, possibly metallic. hmmmm.

yay! i worked out what was wrong.

the plug connecting the drawing membrane ribbon lead to the circuit board had slipped out of it's socket. not enough to make it obvious but once i pushed it in firmly it's working again. fingers, pens, screwdrivers now all move the cursor around.

now to bend it.... there's some lovely looking ic's in there. huge things. a yamaha one (in a sony!?) and a couple marked as sony.

i have finally finished the sony off.... it's a lot of fun. here it is:



i even took notes whilst bending it so will explain what i did via a blog as soon as i get a chance to write it up.

thanks for the advice, my pad was dead too, and it was exactly the same thing, the jaw-like snap thingy that connects the membrane cable to the board. did a quick explore with the bends with some nice results.
found a cool trick too, connect o/p to i/p for crazy scrolling feedback. would be cool hardwired, maybe with pot and switch?
