The circuitbenders.co.uk drumBs module is a tweaked version of the Syntom II, an analogue percussion project first published nearly four decades ago in the April 1983 edition of the mighty Electronics & Music Maker Magazine.

ALL HAIL E&MM!

The drumBs PCB can create a wide range of basic analogue percussive sounds.
The synth section features both a VCO and a noise source, along with a resonant noise filter and an auto roll function. It can be built in both a eurorack or a standalone format. PCB's are now available on the site.

We have a test video of a Roland U110 rack synth with one of our Roland R8/R8M percussion grinding patch boxes. It seems to work exactly the same, and would probably work with any unit that uses the same PCM sound ROM cards.

Circuit Bent Yamaha RY30 Demos

Two demos from a modded Yamaha RY30 with a 24 way bend bus percussion grinding switch matrix.

The RY30 is home to some of the most impressive bent sounds we've ever heard. Even after over 15 years of bending drum machines, we were very surprised by this one! Theres something about the way you can get effects to change and evolve that you don't hear on other machines. Theres also much better separation of the sounds in the mix than on similar units. I have the feeling we haven't even scratched the surface of what you can do with this thing!

All the sounds and effects are created live by processing drum patterns using the switch matrix.

Redshift eurorack multiple & level shifter

We have a few Redshift Multiple eurorack modules available on the site. Its a 7HP three way, one in to three out buffered multiple, with an added up/down line to eurorack level shifter.

Most of them are red, but we also have a few slightly cheaper in blue, for when the UK stumbles out of the EU like a retarded uncle and we suddenly have to call it UKrack instead of eurorack. Apparently Brexit is all about pointlessly changing red things to blue things, and who are we to argue?

Digitech XP ALL pedal mod write up

We have a short write up on a Digitech XP ALL pedal mod on the site. This takes any of the Digitech XP series pedals, and installs a new operating system EPROM that allows you to switch between all four XP pedals, including the mighty XP300 Space Station, in one pedal.

This doesn't mean you should suddenly rush to ebay to buy up any XP series pedals. I think you'll find that we'll be having all of them! Well..... all the ones that aren't insanely priced anyway, so thats none of them. ;-)

KAWAI R100 R-ROM switcher DIY kits

We have a limited number of KAWAI R100 R-ROM switcher kits available on the site.

The kit allows you to freely switch between the sound ROM's for the R100, R50 and R50e drum machines, along with space for a custom ROM if you ever come across one.

Its a solder free kit, so all you need to install it is a drill and a screwdriver. An added bonus is that all the solder points we use for our R100 Drum Destruction patchbay mods are bought out to easily accessible solder points on the left and right of the board.

The Harmonic Engine is based on an old E&MM project from 1981. It supposedly generates a squarewave at harmonic intervals to the input signal, and if you use a basic waveform as an input signal,then thats exactly what it does. If you use anything else as an input, then everything very quickly descends into a beautiful kind of chaos, with all kinds of bizarre gurgling digital squeeks and squeals vomiting forth............

Roland TR77 / Bentley Rhythm Ace FR8L trigger interface PCB's

We have a limited number of trigger interface PCB's available for the Roland TR77 / Bentley Rhythm Ace FR8L.

The sounds on these units are triggered internally using -12v spikes, instead of the standard +5v pulses used on later machines. This interface board is designed to convert standard +5v analogue triggers supplied from an external source such as a midi to trigger converter, modular synth, drum machine or analogue sequencer, into the correct triggers to drive the FR8L / TR77 voices.

The board has 12 identical trigger conversion channels, plus a trigger input with a pair of outputs to drive the Guiro sound and its associated pitch bend triggering.

Phonic Taxidermist 47.2b - Maplins Voice Vandal Clone PCB's available

The Phonic Taxidermist 47.2b is a DIY clone PCB of the Maplin Voice Vandal. This was a kit that was available from Maplins electronics (an electronics chain in the UK similar to Radio Shack) throughout much of the 1990's.
It consists of two main parts, a grungy 10 bit digital delay based around a HT8955A 'Voice Echo' chip, and a high speed audio chopper that strobes incoming audio on and off at four separate frequency bands. Each frequency band can be activated individually or simultaneously with others, and the overall speed of the chopping effect is controlled by the frequency knob.
The chopping circuit produces effects that sounds similar to a kind of nasty cross modulation or filthy frequency based distortion.

Zoom 1204 reclocking mod available

The reclocking mod for the Zoom 1204 effects rack is now available for your unit.

The reclocking knob sets the system clock speed of the RAM and the analogue to digital converters. This means it will extend the reverb and delay times to a degree way outside of what would normally be possible. Reverbs can be altered from short metallic ambiances to massive washes of glacial granular sound just by turning the knob. Delay times and pitch shifting effects are now infinitely variable over a massive range, and even the panning effect can be the source of some wild clock based pitching. Any effect that ever samples the input signal into the RAM in order to process it, can be reclocked.

New LTC1799 mkII PCB modules

The new LTC1799 module mkII PCB's have arrived! The modules are now roughly the same size as an 8 pin chip (11mm x 11mm), and can be mounted in a DIP8 socket or breadboard if you solder in the optional pins. Without the pins the module measures just under 3.5mm high, including the onboard maximum frequency trimmer pot.

This is a simple solution for reclocking and changing the potch of any number of drum machines, effects units, synths, samplers and toys. Just add an external frequency pot and some power.

The circuitbenders.co.uk CB55 is an exact clone of the voice board of the Boss DR55 drum machine. It has the four fully analogue percussion sounds, bass drum, hat, snare, and rimshot, but leaves out the clunky and arguably useless sequencer. There is also an overall accent feature that adds a little extra punch to the whole mix when it is triggered.

We have replacement LCD screens for the Alesis HR16 available on the site. You can chose from white on blue, or black on white versions. They aren't cheap, but they are very good quality, they drop right in without any soldering, and unlike most 16x2 screens, the mounting holes actually line up with the HR16 screw holes!

The mods acts on any effect that uses the sample RAM in any respect. This includes the delays, reverbs, chorus, flanging etc, although the clock speed controls the sample rate even when no other effects are in use.

New Tutorial - Roland TR505 pitch control

We have a new simple tutorial up on the website that details how to use one of our LTC1799 precision oscillator modules to install a wide range pitch control into a Roland TR505 Drum Machine.
It can sweep from punchy clicks and blips at the top, to horribly granular crunching at the bottom, as the sounds disappear under a wall of aliasing noise. The pitch knob can be used alongside any other mods for some seriously messed up percussion sounds.

LTC1799 precison oscillator PCB modules available

We now have LTC1799 precision oscillator modules available in a new PCB version. The PCB measures a tiny 16mm x 12mm and comes as a ready made module to quickly install a clock speed / pitch control into many circuit bent machines. It includes an onboard trimmer to quickly set the highest clock frequency to avoid crashes and unwanted noise. All you need to add is a pot and some wire.

This is a bit of an odd one. We suspect it might be a very early prototype model of the MAM MB33 as it has different case construction and a slightly different PCB layout compared to any other MB33 that we've seen, under any of its many guises.. It certainly sounds slightly more squelchy than most MB33's we've worked on.

As usual it has been modded with the full set of mods we install.

Modified next! SPACEBASS 3.3 for sale

The next! SPACEBASS 3.3 is a rare version of the MAM MB33mkI / FAT Freebass FB383 rackmount clones of the TB303. As far as we know, this version was only ever available very briefly in the US and this is the only one we have ever seen in Europe. Most versions found in the US appear to be imported Freebass' or MB33's, so we'd suspect that very few of these models were ever produced.

Mode Machines x0x rack - MB33 / FAT Freebass FB383

Some people might be aware of the Mode Machines x0x rack, and have noticed is suspicious similarities to the MAM MB33, FAT Freebass FB383 and next! spacebass 3.3. The reason for that is because the x0x rack is not, as they claim, 'a 19" rack mountable version of the x0xb0x'. This could be considered an outright lie as the x0x rack is in fact yet another re-release of the MB33 with a new front panel and the name x0x printed on it. Basically this is a blatantly cynical attempt to cash in on convincing people that the x0x rack bears more relation to a TB303 than a MB33 does. They couldn't even be bothered to update the diagrams in the manual, that still say MB33 on them!

If you own a x0x rack, we can mod it with our Acid FM mods in exactly the same way as on the MB33 or Freebass. Click the link for details.

Apparently 'The Synthcart is an Atari 2600 cartridge that turns your 2600 into a pop music sensation, letting you play music using a pair of Atari's keyboard controllers'. Make of that what you will, but as far as i know it uses the synth circuitry of the Atari 2600 to create a while load of chiptunes and circuitbending style 8bit blips and noise. The Akai XE8 was a rackmout digital drum module from the late 80's and early 90's. It has a grand total of 16 onboard sounds, slots for 2 extra sound cards each featuring another 16 sounds, 8 individual outputs plus a mix out, some excellent percussion shaping parameters including a pitch envelope, and a baffling operating system thats almost impossible to use without a manual!

Mods include a rackmounted external percussion grinding patchbay with 22 main sockets, 2 x patchable switches, 2 x 3 way patching multiples, a patchable push button, and a pitch control.

YAMAHA RX8: The RX8 is a very underrated drum machine released around the same time as the TR-505 that committed the unforgivable crime of not saying the word 'Roland' on the front and therefore, like the Kawai R-50, seems to be more or less forgotten This RX8 features a 25 way patchbay and does a very good line in savagely filthy distorted percussion
You can't help thinking when looking at the RX-8 that the designers were rather too fond of Battlestar Galactica at the time as it seems to hold an uncanny resemblance to a Cylon Warrior. More details can be found HERE.

SPEAK & SPELL: This one is even stranger than usual. Its a standard Drooling Glitcher model, but with a circuitboard we've never seen before. It doesn't react in quite the same way as any other Speak & Spell we've modded, but can still produce 90% of the same sounds, plus some extras. More details HERE.

KORG DDD5: This is the younger and rarer brother of the DDD1 sampling drum machine. The phrase 'absolute 12 bit filth' would be an understatement when describing this machine. Imagine being trapped at a panel beating convention while someone sandpapers your eardrums, and you get the general idea of what this unit is capable of.

LTC1799 OSCILLATORS: Due to some annoying restructuring of the UK mail system we have had to raise the price of shipping for our LTC1799 precision oscillator modules. Shipping for any amount of modules within the UK is still £1, but orders from both mainland Europe and elsewhere have had to go up to £2. This is still a single cost for any number of modules, so it pays to buy in bulk. The LTC1799 page on the site can be found HERE.

SH101 BENDER LEVERS: Our limited stock of replacement SH101 bender levers has now run out. Apologies if you didn't get one, but there is a small possibility we may get some more in the new year.

Modified Frontline DDS20 Delay

This is a fairly strange unit before you even start to circuit bend it. It seems to be an 8-bit digital delay offering either a maximum of 1 second of delay time, or 2 seconds at what appears to be half the bandwidth, although we’re not 100% certain of any of this. Whatever it is it sounds gloriously lo-fi before you even start to mod it.

Mods include tweaking the feedback to well over 100%, adding a 'dry off' switch that gives a 100% wet signal, and 16 delay mangling switches that destroy the echos in what can only be described as a brutally chaotic manner. This could well be the unltimate in Dub delay!

Boss DR110 internal DIN-sync interface

This was a very tight squeeze but we've finally found an effective way of installing an internal DIN-sync interface into an otherwise unmodded DR110. The interface accepts a standard Roland 24ppqn DIN-sync signal and converts it to the 12ppqn clock required by the DR110. It also solves the run/stop issue found on most DR110 sync interfaces, where the DR110 doesn't reset itself to the start of the bar when you press stop on the master clock device.

These are a trio of some of the most infuriatingly annoying little machines we've come accross in a long time. That is, infuriatingly annoying if you happen to be in the same room as someone who has one with them. Strangely they're not so annoying if its you thats getting on someone else nerves with one.

We have added a pitch knob round the back to take the sounds from squealing chipmunk blips at the top, to hideously aliasing low frequency 8 bit noise at the bottom. Theres also a new 3.5mm jack output socket on the top of each unit. If you thought these things were annoying at the internal speaker volume, just image how irritating you can be over a 10K PA rig!

This auction is for a Pioneer SR202 'Reverberation Amplifier'. Basically its a spring line reverb, with an utterly useless and yet absolutely superb mechanical display that succeeds in telling you absolutely nothing, but with enough style to make even the most hardened audio geek weep!

Roland SH101 Bender Levers for sale

We have a limited number of replacement bender levers for the Roland SH101 for sale. If your SH101 has a bender lever with a snapped off post, then this is the replacement part you need. These were originally only ever available from Technology Transplant as whole bender lever assemblies with the pot, modulation switch and metal bracket assembly included, but they haven't been available to buy for nearly 3 years now. We have managed to get hold of a very limited quantity of brand new remanufactured bender levers as shown in the image, with a replacement rotary spring and grub screw. Theres a strong chance we will never be able to get hold of any more of these, so its first come first served.

This is for something you don't see very often, in fact you'll probably never see another one of these again! This is a control / switch board for a Korg KPR77 drum machine that has had every one of the original tactile switches replaced with a new switch. Unlike the original switches, the new ones are sealed so they won't become full of dust particles and start either triggering randomly, double triggering or just not responding at all. These are also rated at 10 million clicks over their lifetime, which is something like 10 times what the original switches could supposedly deal with!

If you own a KPR77 you'll probably have noticed that half the front panel buttons now only work using steam hammer pressure and even if you can get them to work they are more than a little unreliable. With this replacement board it's like you've got a brand new drum machine

Building a LTC1799 based timing oscillator on stripboard: A simple guide.

The Linear Technology LTC1799 is probably the most quick and easy way of adding pitch control to any machine or toy that doesn't have a simple clock resistor. On this page we will be concentrating on building an LTC1799 oscillator on a small piece of stripboard / veroboard with the bare minimum of components.

With an LTC1799 chip, a resistor, a capacitor, a potentiometer, a small piece of stripboard and about 20 minutes of your time you can build an oscillator capable of adding pitch controls to any number of synths, samplers, drum machines and toys.

The LTC1799 is a surface mount precision oscillator chip that has many applications, but the main one we're interested in here is its ability to provide a stable and controllable clock source that can be used to add pitching controls to any number of toys, synthesisers, samplers and other noise producing machines.

We are now selling LTC1799 chips pre-soldered onto a standard sized DIP6 adapter board for use on standard circuitboards or stripboard.. With the addition of a couple of cheap components you can use these to build a timing oscillator capable of changing the pitch and/or running speed of anything from a gameboy to an Akai sampler, via most drum machines and a lot of toy keyboards along the way.

Here we are again, and so soon! We must have things for sale.
Yes indeed! Here we have a few more machines dedicated to giving you a thoroughly bent Christmas. As ever its first come first served so if you want to destroy Santas hearing this festive season you're going to have to be quick..

First up is a modded Kawai R-50e drum machine. This is more or less exactly the same as the normal Kawai R-50 but with a different sound set. Essentially the R-50e was Kawai's answer to rave music in the late 80's, but not having the name Roland behind them their idea of 'electronic' sounds was somewhat different to what you'd expect.

Next up is a drum machine we rarely have available, the Yamaha RX8. Yamaha make the rather dubious claim that the RX8 was the only 16bit machine of the RX range. We'd probably view this with a considerable amount of suspicion as the RX8 is about as filthy sounding as you'll ever hear from a drum machine of this era. Mods include a 25 way patchbay.

Lastly we have another Akai S01 sample grinder with an external rackmounted patchbay. These units chew up audio and spit it out like nothing you've ever heard before. A 16-bit mono rackmount sampler with a 24 way sample grinding patchbay mounted in an external rackmount case, and connected to the main unit via a 25 way plug. The patchbay also includes 2 x 3 way patching multiples, 2 x patchable switches and 1 x patchable push button.

'Connections made between these sockets using standard minijack cables cause all kinds of sound swapping, distortion, pitching, ring modulation, envelope and odd mix effects to be applied to the sounds and patterns. This machine is very keen on producing insane sample chopping effects where sections of your sound are sliced and rearranged as if they have been through some advanced Re-Cycle session in the hands of a crazed lunatic. 90% of the time your samples are not permanently affected when you remove any patchbay cables although if you sample another sound with patchbay connections already in place you often find that the new sound is spliced into the old sound in all kinds on unexpected ways. The amount of connections you can make at any one time is limited only by the number of patch cables you have.'

Robot Voice Modulator

An interesting audio processor from Instructables based around an HT8950 voice modulator chip, although you can process any audio signal with it. Its probably very close to the circuit you see in voice changing megaphones, it certainly sounds similar.
