The Casio SK1, SK5 and SK8 "Slo-A/D" mod has arrived!!
« on: October 30, 2007, 12:38:34 AM »

Hi everybody!

I've just completed the first in a series of new mods for the SK1, SK5 and
SK8.

This first mod is called the "Slo-A/D" mod.

It has been specifically designed for the SK5 and SK8, but will also work on the SK1 (the wiring points may be different, that's all - I don't have an SK1 to show them on).

It enables you to change the attack and decay rates of any preset and
sample sound to a slower attack and decay. The result of this is to
turn the original preset standard sounds into some amazing synth pad
sounds!

The violin and trumpet now sound like classic analog string sounds, the
piano and guitar sound like nothing else, the organ and celeste are now
stunning glassy DX7 "ghost" pads! Try it out on the surf and lion
sounds he he!

You can also apply it to any of the sampled sounds, in addition to
their own selectable A/D envelopes, to get even longer attacks and
decays!

I've uploaded the illustrated step-by-step guide onto the Yahoo SK group forum, in the FILES section (you'll have to join as a member in order to access the file, though - but there are so many other goodies on that site, you may as well!!):

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/CasioSK/

If you are doing this mod on the SK-1, download the SK-1 service manual there as well, to help you find the voice envelope points for the SK-1 for the mod

Enjoy

Cheers, Graham

I've just put some mp3's examples of the Slo-A/D mod on the yahoo site.
In each mp3, the original sound is first played, then the same sound with the Slo-A/D effect applied.

Cheers, Graham

Hi, I'd be really interested in this one, but since the Yahoo Group does not exist anymore i have no access to it. Woudl you mind sharing this on the forums here as well?
thanks!

Only a year too late: did you end up finding what you were looking for? I have the plans saved to my computer if you still want them; it's a very simple mod.

i've moved all my SK5 mods over to a SK1 this week.  all going well.

One issue, I put the CV envelope points at the place suggested in the PHAT FILTER guide for the SK1 - each of them at a diode

While it works for the phat filter, it is strange for the SLO-A/D mod.

Instead of being a slow attack/release it doesn't alter the attack or the release, just the sustain???

Does this sound right?

I'll have to go back in and hook them up right after the CPU like suggested elswhere

It should make a slower attack ,and then a slower release once the note is released. What size capacitors did you use? the bigger the capacitor, the slower the attack/release will be. Try 100uF

I've been exploring it more.  It is doing the right this to the speaker audio [i.e. acting as an envelope] but not to the Phat Filter output

I've tapped the audio out as per the instructions in your .pdf document with Signal:Noise's PCB scan.

The issue is that the audio that goes to the filter bank is pre-envelope.  When I play a note it sustains for the full length of the sample from the phat filter output, even though the speaker output is shaped

I've been thinking, maybe because the SK1 has envelope controls it might mix all the audio channels together before applying the enveloping.  Could this be the case - in which case I can't do four channels of phat filtering???

I haven't done this mod to my SK-1 yet, but looking over the service manual, no reason it houldnt work just like a 5 or 8. Pins 89-92 of the main chip output the envelope CV for each audio channel.
