speakers vs no speakers...
« on: December 27, 2009, 02:14:08 AM »

who here removes speakers from bent keyboards?

other than creating more space for controls and things, what other advantages and reasons are there for doing so?

it seems i read that it helps for voltage crash.

thoughts?

driving speakers requires a lot of current, so especially power amp IC's can behave differently when used with/out speakers.
for some things (like voltage crash etc.) no speakers are indeed a good thing.. makes the instability more stable, if you know what i mean  ;)

i prefer to put speakers on a switch so i have the choice between speaker and line out- but if i have to choose one over the other i'd go with a jack, just to be able to run it through effects/mixer/amp which saves you the pain of having to mic stuff.

i only ever remove speakers if I absolutely have to - I don't like making breakout boxes unless there is a good way to attach them to the toy - I think if a circuit bent toy can't make noise as a standalone unit, it loses lots of its kitch novelty magic  ;)

true. it's just that i like to be able to use them in songs (oh, the dreadful humanity of it all!)
and as such like to be able to have them pluggable onstage..

are those holes, or are all those speakers?! lol

i removed the spkr from my casio pk-1, it has a 1/4" out jack, and i am going to put the LFO where the speaker was!

sticking an LFO in a keyboard is where it's at!!!

They are all speakers - some guy made it for an audio installation I took part in a couple of years back. It was about 2 feet square and I think it looks a treat!
