my first guitar pedal
« on: April 05, 2011, 02:11:31 PM »

hi everyone

i am a complete newb when it comes to circuit bending and guitar pedals.
as well as my first speak and spell bend, i am looking into building a guitar pedal.

i found this step by step as my first project
http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-an-easy-guitar-distortion-pedal-STEP-BY-STEP/

when looking at the parts i would need on step 6 i noticed that it isnt very specific.
for example, capacitors. it says any capacitor, but i found so many different types that it made me think there must be a difference in what type you use.

am i wrong? can i use any parts where it says any parts?

thanks

That's a rubbish website.  Spammy as hell, with absolutely no useful content.

Here's a better one:

thanks for the suggestion.
this guide doesnt seem to get simple enough for me though. i havent read through word for word yet, i just scanned, but i have to express i am a complete newb.

maybe ill have to do more research before i get my hands dirty :(
i suppose if i knew how to read schematics it would help a LOT

i will come back to this fuzzbox though.

thanks

Well all I can suggest is, keep hitting Google and various simple electronics books (Babani Press do some nice ones) until you understand the circuits a little bit, then come and ask more questions ;-)

You probably want to start putting together a simple toolkit and getting some bits, and old equipment to cannibalise.  Old video recorders used to be great in the late 80s when they were full of through-hole discrete components.  And motors, and springs, and microswitches...

i have been reading a bit and am starting to understand a lot more. i will keep reading though. thanks for the suggestion of babani press. i will look them up.

a friend of mine is bringing me some old pcb's to rape soon, so i will hopefully be able to get some parts to play with. cant wait :)

thanks a lot for the help

i plan for my first stomp bozes (in random order) to be a resonant lowpass filter with lfo, a tremolo (which sounds similar to a vintage amp tremolo, but prolly not tube), and a talk box (which i sholuld build first, since essentially i have  most of what i need for that project already...).
