You can build an exact copy of a 60's Fuzz Face that would cost you something like £500 to buy off ebay, for less than £10. Theres a few fuzz circuits here http://fuzzcentral.ssguitar.com/ (http://fuzzcentral.ssguitar.com/) which are easy to build on stripboard.

I just bought a couple of Big Muff clone PCB's from http://www.guitarpcb.com/ (http://www.guitarpcb.com/) but they have a load of other stuff as well.

If you want horrific noise it might be more interesting to get something like a cheap phaser pedal and circuitbend it to buggery.

if you like to have a kit with all parts and schematic laid out for you then these two usa based companies are pretty good (they both post world wide but you do pay import duty)

general guitar gadgets (religious owners site shuts on sunday usa time 8))

4ms pedals (check out the atoner and noise swash)
