Somehow they sound a lot more organic and less dirty than Speak & spell machines, in my experience

For anyone else attempting to bend a Speak & Write. Its very easy to accidently cut through one of the traces for the keyboard membrane by drilling blindly in the area at the top where it says Speak&Write etc. I know from first hand experience 

Where matt has the pitch knob is pretty safe but i'd be a little wary of where the 'dist' button is. That was probably very lucky that some of the buttons weren't disabled.

yep ! i was very very lucky i was about 2mm away from the circuit trace

I picked up a Maths Marvel at a car boot sale ages ago. I've only just got around to try n' open her up. I'm through the billion clasps but can't get much further. I'm sure there's a screw somewhere under the membrane. Is there a technique to removing the membrane without knackering it. It seems to be glued down with unicorn hooves and orphan tears.

Any help would be muchly appreciated

I have a vague feeling that the maths marvel has a screw thats sealed under plastic somewhere, or that could have been a completely different machine. I do remember having an absolute nightmare trying to get into the thing and then finding nothing of any interest inside and giving it away.

Thinking about it, theres definitely a hidden screw somewhere that's been sealed over with plastic. Try knocking the casing with a screwdriver as if you were looking for a secret passageway or something. I guess at some point it'll sound different.

Yep, there was a screw alright. It was right underneath one of the buttons. I've had a brief poke around and can say that you, Crusty Paul, have a Nostradamus-like quality. Not a lot going on in there at all. It's not overly dis-similar to a speak & music. I'll give it an hour of my time and if nothing jumps out at me, it's getting flushed.
