If you have an Akai with a dying backlight don't pay stupid money for a new one when you can get this for around £5 from conrad.de! Its slightly less wide than the original but if you position it right you'd never know the difference.

I bought one of those to backlight a TR-626 LCD but it just makes the TR crash when plugged. I guess the EL converter must be pretty violent with the rest of the electronics. Got any clue ?...

How are you wiring it up? The 626 runs on 9v but the inverter probably wants 12v and pulls a whole lot more milliamps than a normal 626 PSU will be able to supply.
