Title: COMMODORE 64 ACTION!
Post by: Circuitbenders on February 22, 2007, 01:06:03 PM
Thanks to the nice people at www.prophet64.com and their brilliant synth cartridge i am now the pround owner of a beast of an analogue synth in the form of a modded commodore 64. The TB303 emulation actually sounds like what i always wanted the bottom end of a 303 to sound like i.e. huge meaty bass!

Mods consist of:
4 assignable control knobs
Feedback / resonance knob
Composite Video output
Noise floor / feedback knob on-off switch
Audio in to filter
Audio out jack
DIN sync

I've got one quick demo at the moment, i'll upload some more when i have time
DEMO1 (http://www.circuitbenders.co.uk/demos/c64acidsquelch2.mp3)

Now thats what i CALL analogue!

Very nice - I just ordered a synthcart for my Atari 2600, which has some crunchy beats going. Excitement!

Nice one!   Did you install a second SID chip when you did the mod?  I saw a good tutorial via getlofi.com and seemed the mod is a bit fiddly in parts, but from the sound example you posted it seems well worth the work.  I look forward to the other samples  :)

My synthcart turned up yesterday by an uncanny coincidence, can you tell me what voltage atari 2600's work on so i don't have to make any effort finding out?

I haven't installed another SID on this one mainly because the only other one i had handy was an older 6550 which i'm told won't stack properly with a newer 8550. On the plus side the prophet 64 people make a board that allows you to easily mount another SID for just 4 euros http://www.prophet64.com/sid2sid.php

I'd love to, but I have not been able to get a unit yet. This link says the power cable converts the normal 120 volts AC from your wall plug into 9V DC

I just picked up what I thought was a C64 at a thrift shop.

I glanced in the box to verify that the power supply was included, but didn't think to check that the model of the computer matched the box.

Turns out I got a Commodore VIC 20.  Has anyone ever heard about anything to be done with one of those?

Theres a really good speech synth cart for the VIC20 in existance but you'd have to keep your eye on ebay to find one. I'm not entirely sure what sound chip the VIC20 has but you can make an audio out

So I got myself a C64 today, it was Queensday in Amsterdam, everybody and their dog selling their old shit in the streets, circuitbender's wet dream! 5 minutes from my house for 15 Euro with the giant floppy disk drive (5 1/4 Inch floppies!), a  box of disks and a joystick!

Been reading up on it, the SID chip is analogue and the filter even uses some external - that explains the very nice fat sound. Wow.

The Prophet 64 Cart is discontinued BUT they're soon coming out with a thing called the MSSIAH http://www.mssiah.com/ which will be all the synths and the sequencer and a MIDI interface all in one cartridge! Can't wait...  :)

Sorry to bring this post back from the dead but this is the COOLEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN! I had no idea the C64's where capable of this. Other than the mods is that literally just the SID? With the MSSAIH cart? Sounds amazing...

Are there any details online anywhere on how to do this? I bought a cheap C64 ages ago to use with the cartridge but havnt gotten round to buying one yet.
