Has anyone ever looked inside one of these? I've just opened mine and noticed what appears to be a c opper sheet soldered to the PCB. Is this vital or can it be removed? I see a lot of potential within this unit but think that it needs an external box as the space is tight inside.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Dave.

It's RF shielding, to stop noise from the digital parts coupling into other equipment. You can live without it, but it may interfere with other equipment.

Does it need to be connected or do you think I could maybe cut around it. I read on another site via google that the casing on the Yamaha RX-8 is very conductive but I thought plastic was not a conductor of electricity.

See that kind of dark grey powdery coating on the inside of the case? That stuff is conductive so yes, the inside of the case is conductive.
Just desolder the RF shielding, do your mods and resolder it.
