Post by: Matt the Modulator on June 18, 2009, 07:44:35 PM
Ok i have a bit of a dilemma well some choises actually  ;) i have just sold of some circuit bend gear, viny, recording gear (and still have plenty left) l and have paid of fmy depts leaving  £400 to spare

iam thinking of getting a Roland mc-202 but now iam not so sure i have a doepfer set up all ready and a few analog synths mmmmm so do i
gett a mc-202 or a shit load of stuff to circuit bend (which will probably keep me busy longer or get blown up very quickly as it does) mmmm or party mmmm or mmm  or   :-\ see what i mean anyway feel free to vote up to two times and help me or not make a decision!!!
Thanks for your time Matt the modulator

You seem to have accidently left out the 'buy crustypaul another x0xb0x kit' option. I wouldn't mind something made by Eventide as well if you could stretch to that  ;)

What can you do on an MC202 you can't do a million times better on a doepfer modular, but then you'd probably only get about 3 modules for £400. Hmmm, what i dilemma, i'll have to get back to you on this one.

from this options i would go for the 202
you can sequence your modular with it, and it sounds very sweet
you can always get more doepfer and/or booze
good luck

MC-202 in my book.. NO doubt about it !

2-channel CV/gate sequencer seperate outputs... 1 DIN sync in 2 DIN sync out...

And you don't need a friggin "VW Transporter" to gig with it  ;D

2729 "events"

Thats the maximum.. You can use it on one sequencer or you can run both at the same time, but then the 2 sequences share the 2729 "events"

right ok i think ive got it now every note, accent is an event if its 1v per octave then the 202 could be the move
just checked it is 1v/oct  :)

Also there's some people who have modded it..

Midi: http://www.synhouse.com/MC-202-Notes/MC-202-notes.html (http://www.synhouse.com/MC-202-Notes/MC-202-notes.html) or you could buy a midi retrofit module from http://highlyliquid.com/ (http://highlyliquid.com/) if you can find one that suits your needs.. I think the most expensive one is 45USD so you still have money to spare..

This guy did some mods: http://www.subatomicglue.com/202l0g/ (http://www.subatomicglue.com/202l0g/)

This guy went all in ! Rackmount, MIDI, extra CV in and out, audio in and modular out and a bunch of other stuff overdrive, feedback etc... I wouldn't do the rackmounting thou..

Damn, now I want a MC-202.. Buy me one please!

EDIT: Just found this aswell.. Program that makes programming of the MC-202 easy peasy.. There's a demo, and the prog. cost 40USD so you should still be able to get a MC-202 + midify it + this program for your £400

Its not a beginners project but the build instructions are easy to follow and as long as you are carefull its pretty easy to not make any mistakes. Me and a mate of mine built 2 over a few days and they both worked fine first time. Well, i say first time, mine took a bit of rebuilding after i dropped the power supply board onto the main board while it was plugged in and fried half the logic chips.  :-[

I'm not convinced as to the MC202. They are way to expensive for what they are and i'm sure theres plenty of kits you could build from scratch with the same money which would be more interesting and more fun.

;D HEHE i see you have added an extra option to my poll! and i wonder who has voted in favour of it ??

i had a look at finding all the parts my self and just buying the pcb and microcontroller From adafruit
http://www.littlediode.com/components/home.php (http://www.littlediode.com/components/home.php) sell most of the hard to find ic's and transistors mite be a fun option ??

Check the x0xb0x forums - some members have written up full BOM spreadsheets for gathering all of the kit parts (including rares).  The cost was roughly $370ish if I remember correctly? Not much higher than the actual kit if you're on the waiting list which seems somewhat unreliable now.

If you can get all of the components easily enough I'd say go for the x0xb0x.

I could have sworn that they weren't actually making kits anymore. Maybe theres no point in being on the waiting list  :-\

In the UK you can get virtually all the rare parts from Cricklewood or Nikko/Dalbani (check the components section for links) although i bought a load of the supposedly rare transistors from ebay including 100 2SC945's which were used in later TB303's in place of the 2SC536F's that are more tricky to get hold of.

You do have to be careful on ebay though that you don't get a load of fake components.

Judging from the poll results i can expect my new x0xb0x kit to arrive pretty soon then?

:D err no iam still trying to find a mc 202 i can afford that someone is willing to say it works for definate rather than "yeh it works the last time i used it about 3 years ago and its been safe in a draw since" i put a st-305 in a draw working and now it doesnt !!! i dont just dont trust draws

What's an ST-305?
Title: Re: what should i spend my money on ??

its a analog drum machine by sound master. its bascially an upgraded Boss DR-55 with seperate audio outputs
full title "Sound Master STIX  programma ST-305".

not a lot on the web ive had 3 very unreliable and are basicaly pants!

That sounds rubbish.  I was talking to Lonestar on the IRC channel about this - it would be *trivial* to produce a "new" DR55 with perhaps MIDI control and separate outs.

What would you pay for a kit for such a device?  You could probably do one with 16 LEDs and a couple of buttons for programming for about 50 quid, sans case.  We all know how much circuit benders love making cases ;-)

I suspect you could get a lot more than £50 if you had the words Roland and Analogue somewhere in the advertising blather  ::)

would be nice if the hats would be programmable..

Yes.  I'd need thousands of times more than £50 to pay off the massive trademark lolsuit.

which is presumably why in the original basstation manual it kept referring to the Ronald 303  :D
