Title: Casio sa-2 hidden sounds.
Post by: phantompowers on July 01, 2009, 11:16:02 AM
Does anyone know how to access the SA-1 hidden sounds on an SA-2, without them being randomly selected?
I have done several mods on my SA-2 but can only access the hidden sounds randomly. It would be a lot more practical if I could add a switch somewhere that sent it straight into SA-1 mode, where I could select individually the new sounds.
Random is good for a laugh but not very good if you want to use it live.
Can anyone help?

::) Any way...

Yeah. There are combinations of pins on the larger IC that will act as actual sound select buttons that aren't on the SA-2 (sound select buttons 5, 6, 7, 8, 9).

I added two additional "hidden sound" buttons on my SA-2 here:
Circuit Bent Casio SA-2 [Video Model] with 14 modifications (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RcM0WkiTmY#lq-lq2-hq-vhq)
They work like normal sound select buttons.

Only problem is I can't find my SA-2 schematic :P Just poke around on the large IC and listen for the click type sound it makes when you press a sound select button and see if you have a new sound.  Then try other connections with one of the points you just found as a common point.  Shouldn't be too hard... and share, of course!

EDIT:

Oh yeah; additionally you can try this:

I did this to my other SA-2 here if you'd like to see how it works:

Ha ha, yeah there should be an SA-2 forum!
Cheers for your help on all your relative posts, I'm going get stuck into that big chip right away.
Really enjoyed your vid. That is a quality bent keyboard!
thanks again.

Hey, sorry to hijack this thread kind of, but whenever I mess around with hidden sounds it always crashed for about two weeks (as in it won't play normally and it'll just stop working all together). Has anyone ever had this happen? Is there any way to get around it?

Yeah, mines crashed a few times but switching it off and on again usually does the trick. Or taking the batteries out and replacing them again. I guess I'm just lucky!

I've been wondering for a long time, how did you do that "video out"? Did you just attach an RCA jack to the speaker terminals?

Breakbeatnazi... I wired up the two pins exactly as your diagram for the hidden sounds on the SA-2 but I'm sure most of them are duplicates of the 1-4 presets?

Orangery,
You can select different sounds with keys 1 - 5, right? You can also select different sounds by by pressing the keys in two note sequences, i.e. press key 2 then key 1 and you will get another sound. Press key 3 then key 1 and you will get another. This works for all the 5 keys in two note combinations.
Also you can access even more sounds by making a connection to the other legs on the chip. I think they are on either side of the leg you have just soldered to.

phantompowers, it seems the hidden voices could be from a SA-8 (can check later as I have one) as this machine uses numbers 1 to 5.  The new combinations are 1-5, 2-5, 3-5, 4-5, 5-5, 5-4, 5-3, 5-2 and 5-1.  I thought they were meant to be from an SA-1?  Maybe more switches are needed?

In breakbeatnazi's video you'll notice that the 'fifth' key from the bottom was used every time which would make sense... something like 1-5, then 4 on it's own (same as 5-4) then 2-5... the rest of it hidden as his fingers got in the way... some nice playing on there too by the way!

I did breakbeatnazi's hidden sounds bend [from above] on my SA2; you can see it in this video:

One other thing... does anyone know how to kill the hi-hat during random glitches?  I get some nice little random tunes going but the hi-hat is nearly always there also.
