Title: Casio VL-Tone fried?
Post by: Gnome on August 24, 2009, 06:24:49 PM
Hey I just bought a Casio VL-Tone and came home to try it out...forgetting to buy batteries.  I then used an ac adapter which was too powerful for the casio, I heard a hummmmm then a pop then I seen smoke.

Is my Casio done for?
Will it work with batteries?  Thanks

Check for burnt componentss near the power input on the board. I'd be willing to bet you'll find a blown diode somewhere around that area.

Hmmmm a furry inside but no burns.  Also a dropped off diode can't see where its from but.

The diode is detatched? Well there's your problem. I'm guessing it's somewhere near the power supply. Maybe this will help you find it http://weltenschule.de/TableHooters/picts/Casio_VL-1_pcb.jpeg (http://weltenschule.de/TableHooters/picts/Casio_VL-1_pcb.jpeg)

Ah ha.  Turns out the lid of one of my Rubycon capacitors has came off.  It appears rubycon do capaciotors for sound quality, which will explain my lack of sound.  Thanks for all the help.

If you have a diode thats dropped off you may want to find out where it came from. I'm guessing it might be a polarity protection diode thats stops the machine being fried if you use a power supply with the wrong polarity, which might have been your problem in the first place.

Yeah the diodes sorted.  Just the broken capacitor that needs fixed, I'm assuming thats why I have no sound but have a display, unless i jiggle the two prongs inside the capacitor around which makes the display dissapear and do all sorts of crazy stuff.
