Title: ALL POSSIBLE BENDS AND MODS FOR SK1
Post by: jamiewoody on November 20, 2009, 04:09:24 PM
i know this question as probably been asked a million times, so please forgive me. i did use the search function first, and i did subscribe to the yahoo group the tutorial is on, it just takes forever to be accepted to those things!

THE QUESTION:
what are ALL possible mods that can be done to the sk1? also, is there a practical place on the web i can go to learn them? could someone send me some links?

i already know about the patchbay, i got info from casperelectronics on that. but, can the power crash, pitch shift, etc be applied to sk1?

my concertmate 500 will be my next bend project. to me, this is my first BIG project like this. i want to be well organized and equipped for this.i plan to even create a brand new workspace in my house.

and as a matter of fact, i have the pieces cut out for a wooden case for this synth!

thanks in advance.

sorry about the caps.

i mean, more specifically, i know about the patch matrix on the sk1.

are the other mods, (pitch shift, power crash, etc) which are available for the smaller sa-x series keyboards doable on an sk1 also?

i'd like to be as organized as i can before beginning this. i'm getting ready to order components, new solder, etc. i'm even going to make a workspace with everything in front of me that i need, nice and clean before beginning.

You can find a page with my modifications of the SK1 here (http://www.xs4all.nl/~samzen/synth/synth.html#casio)
If you have any questions, just go ahead.

Here is a list of the mods on my SK-8:

Phat Philter Bank - polyphonic VCF filter with CV input and resonance
Slo-AD mod - changes the attack and decay rates of the preset and samples sounds
Pitch Wheel mod - add a pitch bend wheel to the instrument sounds - like a real synth wheel
Memory Expansion Mod - expands the sample memory by 32x
Memory expansion display - 2-digit LED readout and bank select for the 32x expansion
Instrument individual out mod - individual output for each of the 4 polyphony voices, without drums coming through
Instrument Stereo mod - creates a true stereo panning output for the instrument and sample voices
LFO mod - add an LFO vibrato to the instrument and sample sounds
Drums filter bank - likewise but for the drum rhythm sounds
Drum pitch mod - changes the drum pitch by +/- 1 octave
Drum swap mod - swap the different drum sounds with others in a rhythm
Drums out mod - separate line out for drums only, without instrument sounds coming through
Drum trigger mod - trigger the 4 drum sounds on the SK-8 independently (like the SK-5)
MIDI mod - MIDI IN interface for the instrument sounds and drum sounds - SK becomes a sound and drum module for external sequencer

Others available but not tried by me:

DIY preset ROM sounds - replace the preset ROM instrument sounds with your own sounds
Program Change mod - change the instrument sounds and drum rhythms externally by MIDI

Most of these are mentioned here on this forum but the original guides are on the Yahoo groups SK forum:

Good list there, Graham!

Also of note is the Bypass Filter Mod: Casio put in an anti-aliasing lowpass filter because of the low sampling rate, which muffles the sounds quite a bit, this makes things a lot brighter and much easier to work into a track.

Details are both on a thread here and on the CasioSK file list.

Oh, yeah - I forgot to include that one on my list! There is also a sampling input filter bypass mod that does the same thing when you sample - combined with the output filter bypass makes for crunchy bright grit sampling fun! It's also in the yahoo CasioSK group.

Cheers, graham

in the interest of posterity, and since Yahoo doesn't care about posterity.....if anyone has the information from the now-defunct Yahoo group mentioned in this thread, would you consider posting it here? (or somewhere) thank you, all!!  :D

a lot of graham's mods can be found here:

http://www.warningwillrobinson.com.au/

Generally they work on an SK1, but may need a little tweaking.

I've done the SLOW AD mod, Phat Filter mod, Memory Expansion, as well as the patch bay mods.

Also, I recommend trying capacitors/diodes/transistors/relays in your patchbay for more interesting bends.
