Title: Yamaha DX100
Post by: Circuitbenders on April 27, 2012, 07:19:17 PM
Here some demos of my Yamaha DX100. I did an 8 switch dataline cut mod on it.

Whats weird is that when you cut a dataline with a switch, it often messes things up so that each note sounds different in an 8 note cycle. Presumably it steps though to the next note of polyphony for each new note you hit, but if each note has been bent differently, you get weird wavetable-esque sequences in 8 note loops.

.............if that makes any sense.

Where did  you get the data sheet for that chip? I had no luck.

I didn't. It seems that nobody outside of Yamaha has ever seen the datasheet, but if you look on the schematic it shows you which pins are the data pins etc.

Ha, now i need to find the schematics for my DX200 as the programming software doesn't run on Win7 it's impossible to edit the preset sounds anymore...

Where is this schematic? I googled for dx-100 service manual, but no joy.

deathbender - surely that's just a case of getting some sort of sysex editor, rather than a service manual?

Not if you're looking for information how to do a dataline cut (if possible at all and i doubt ist is...) rahter than days of hassle with a non working sysex editor ;)

Would this work with any 4-op FM synth do you think?

cracking bends paul! sounds mint

i take it this is digital info being sent so there no point in a pot on something like this?
the machine either 'hears' it or it doesnt... is that right?

im sure i've got a yamaha around here thats ripe for something like this

would be class to cross patch similar synths if you took those bends out a patchbay

I'm trying this on my DX21 today - don't see any reason why this wont work - will post review later!

okay, so the dataline cut mod works differently on this guy.

I get a diverse set of tricks, depending on the patch(es) - from data scrambling to detuning to octave up/down and high end cutoff.   Personally, I think the dx100 sounds more wild, but that might just be my taste.  BUT, on a DX, let me say that a few treatments at the flick of a switch is pretty welcomed...and on the DX21 without having an assignable slider, its a blessing.

At one point it all went japanesey on me, but I just had to do a manual reset and reassign the sound banks and midi channels and she pepped back up.

hey crustypaul, i wonder if u could help me? i do like circuitbenders, but i want to bend my yamaha dx27 in a other way, but i dont know how,  i want instead of using an software editor, make a serie of sliders with wich i can adjust the adsr, and the operator setup and the feedback, i know that that is not difficult to do if u know wich 1 dollar chip data u must send to wich port of the main soundchip, but i dont know how!

perhaps u can tell me?

okidoki bey from holland.

yes the only stupid way i can think of is to : first make a chip regognize that the slider is moving, then send a 5 volt puls to the edit knob, then also 5 volts puls  to the function button i want to edit, and then....

but i think this is unnassicairy complicated?
