Title: Anyone got a decent LED strobe circuit?
Post by: Circuitbenders on July 25, 2008, 06:43:00 AM
Does anyone have or know of a decent schematic for an LED strobe, preferably capable of running about 100-200 LED's?
I've been searching round the new for a while but can't seem to find anything really usable.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I built quite a good setup with some Luxeons, some big mosfets, and controlled by an arduino board.  Definitely Luxeons are the way to go.  With two red, two green and two blue, I could light up most of my garden.

Its not exactly what your looking for, but its interesting.

Now that would look very cool scaled up a bit and mounted on the wall in a club displaying audio frequencies.

Basically someone has asked me if i could build a big board of solid strobe, and i'm thinking it should be possible with a few hundred 10mm LED's. This is more about having as much strobe surface as possible rather than sheer brightness.

I'm guessing this is gonna do a number on the eyes.  Can't imagine it'd be to healthy to look at a few hundred LED surface.

You could do this with a microcontroller and a load of LED driver chips. You can get some TSOT ones which would be workable.

Would the light have to have some kind of input or could it be manually programmed? Im working on something similar at university for my 3rd year project. Well a PWM driven LED light for filming purposes, PWM could easily be used for a strobing effect, you can vary the flicker pretty easily.

Big Clive does a nice LED panel that fits in a 250W floodlight case - IIRC it was a couple of quid for the board and about 15 quid for the (very very bright) LEDs.

For some strange reason i've just bought 5 of these because i saw them cheap on ebay

Thats a 10"x14" PCB with 1536 red LED's mounted on it. 5 of them gives a total of 7680 LED's........ which should be fun to power.

They appear to have come from Canada where they were used in these LED signs http://knol.google.com/k/dale-mahalko/recomm-jvf-2010-a/3tgukbehb0nyq/1# (http://knol.google.com/k/dale-mahalko/recomm-jvf-2010-a/3tgukbehb0nyq/1#) .From that article and the pictures at the bottom theres absolutely no way i'm ever going to get them working as they should, so any ideas what to do with them? A hellish wall of red strobe maybe  ;D

That's awesome! :o  Let us know how you're going with these!

The thing about how to drive them has been deleted, but surely it can't be *that* hard?
