Anybody scored some cheap gear recently?

A Casio SA-10 for 2€ and a cute little 4 channel mixer (heavy duty metal casing, battery/line powered, separate tone control per channel, 1/4" jacks, MM40 Micro Mixer from Japan...) for 5€

i always rather enjoy it when someone thinks they are ripping you off but in reality you've just walked off with something absurdly cheap.

I got a Korg Prophecy for £65 the other week. As i was trying it out i was wondering why the guy selling it wouldn't take his hand away from the output jacks and lo and behold when i got it home there was no sound. 20 minutes later i had both jacks replaced and a fully working Prophecy.

Some people should probably search the internet for common faults with machines they are selling before they try and rip people off on a machine they think is broken a whole lot worse than it is.   ::)

Something similar often happens when you buy "broken" Gameboys on E-Bay. Just put some batteries in, wiggle them around with your thumb and voila, it's perfectly working! Or these idiots that sell them as broken with the comment "only shows a black bar on the screen when turned on". When you don't have a cartridge in the slot and turn on a Gameboy, there ALWAYS IS just a black bar... sigh... another mint condition Gameboy for 1€

Stationary PC: 2 Ghz/1048 Gb Ram/80 GB HDD - Just totally wasted by virus.. Reformatted and working like new..

Laptop: 1 Ghz / Ram  can't remember/ - Missing HDD and optical drive.. Can get in to the bios so it is working fine..

Older 40 station CB radio, great condition.

Tandberg (Cross Field) Series 3300X Reel to Reel Tape Recorder - I have no tape, but everything seems to work.

Erres - model ? Reel to Reel Tape Recorder HAVE SOUND ON SOUND  ;D - I have no tape, but everything seems to work.

4 * 19" LCD monitors.. 1 Samsung Syncmaster 930BF working perfectly, 2 with dead backlight (changing CCFL to LED), 1 just dead..

Yes that was just from this week.. But still, not everything.. Now I just need to find some tape reels, and have some fun  ;D

eBay.  Make sure you get a splicing block, some razors, tape and a chinagraph too - everyone should know how to edit on tape ;-)

Many years ago when I was a spotty geeky teenager I used to record stuff on 1/4" tape and edit them into loops Radiophonic Workshop-style, and feed them through homebrew echo and distortion effects, along with rather out-of-time keyboard playing and computery beepy noises.  I wish I still had the recordings of that.  Maybe I could reconstruct them.

Sick sick sick...

Today I found a "Yamaha TG100 Tone Generator" and a "BOSS RDD-10 Digital Delay" in the bin.. In fully working condition !

Two weeks ago I found a "Korg DDD-1 Drum Machine" in the bin aswell It has the sampling board and 4 rom cards but sadly not the ram card..

Oh how I love my newly found dumpster.. I'm NOT sharing it's location with ANYONE..

EDIT: Ok the Yamaha TG100 output dosen't work.. It has an audio in, and that works fine thru the headphones out, but not the Line out.. Also I can see that it's recieving midi notes, but I get no sound generated from the TG100 at all.. Not from the line out or the headphones out..

Maybe some of the more educated people of this board have any idea why ? I've cleaned it completely, and there's no obvious malfunctioning components..

Something tells me you're going to need an oscilloscope for this, so you can check if you're actually getting anything going into the output section of the circuit or coming out of the synth chips. Its going to be a bit difficult tracking down where you're actually getting a signal otherwise.

Can you start another thread for this? In fact i've just added another board for this very purpose

If you're just tracing the signal path, a small amplifier and speaker will work.  I've used a mixer input for this, but I don't recommend it - sometimes you get loud clicks and pops that will damage your speakers.  Maybe the amp from a set of el-cheapo PC speakers would be good.  If you kill them, buy a new £2.99 from Argos set.

cz101 is great little machine, big bass.. i also payed 40 for mine  :)

found 2 tascam dat recorders in the street few weeks ago, but i already have a marantz cd recorder deck wich i
use as master recorder (found for 15 euro in the fleemarket  ;D )
so i sold them for 75 euro
not long before that i got a emu proteus 2 for 15 euro (little work) and an esi 32 with full options for 20 euro
as well as a dx7 with expanded memory and backlight for 60 euro
btw, i have about 5 or 6 19" delay's , never payed more than 25 orso for them, wich i also found great deals,
theyre very freaky machines by the way, in series, cross feedbacking etc... nice

anyways, good times for cheap hardware  :D let them all switch to zero's and one's and leave their old machines
for the freaks

Ok, hardly bargain of the century but i just won a vl1 for less than a tenner on ebay. Normaly i don't bother with them as people bid them up to £30+ at times. But i bent one last week and had a handy c64 alike sounding (something i seem unable to resist trying on anything these days) version on the go until i slipped with the iron doing the last two hookups, soldered two points together that i shouldn't have and didn't unplug it in time. No more drums for vl1.

Bugger :(

A bunch of assorted stuff yesterday, but the one I'm wanting to ask about is the Commodore 16 I got for $10. I figured I'd just put it up on eBay. It's in it's box with EVERYTHING, including a tutorial cartridge. Anyone with an experience on these? I know almost nothing about it.

A friend had one way back. I don't know a whole lot about them other than it was a very bizarre move on the part of commodore. From the little i saw of it running and the lack of support it recieved i could only gather that it was inferior in a lot of ways to the c64. Although having just read this it would seem this isn't necessarily the case.

http://www.richardlagendijk.nl/cip/article/index/264 (ftp://http://www.richardlagendijk.nl/cip/article/index/264)

I always remember thinking of it as having a more vic20 feel to it than a successor to the c64. This was probably down to the fact it had no sid audio which was half the reason a fair few games sold as well as they did. Stick a decent hubbard sound track on even the dullest of games and it became worth playing through to the end.

Yesterday
sk-1 for $2.99 CDN

Sunday Last Week
sk-10 for $2.99 CDN

I cant believe they charge so little for these keyboards at the thrift store I go to. They charge up to 9 dollars for shitty toy keyboards. I think they determine the price based on size, which makes me laugh. If only they knew how much you can get on ebay for these.

Casio pt-10 - 25p
Random toy keyboard with Fur Elise as the only stored track - 25p

4 keyboards and a transformer, total, £4

weirdly when you buy toys from charity shops in the UK they usually come with a free set of batteries in them which porbably cost about as much as the toy itself, so it doesn't matter that much if you get it home and it doesn't work  :D

I just picked up 2 MINT condition Hing Hon EK-001 keyboards off eBay for 14 pounds!  For seven whole days I was the first bidder, the only bidder and at end of auction; the only bid sniper.  I paid 10 pounds for one and the other was 4 pounds as it apparently has a screwed keyboard matrix.  The physical condition of both units is immaculate though so the faulty Hing Hon will need to be looked at and repaired.

I thought these Hing Hons were meant to be the 'holy grail' of circuit bending?  There was nothing wrong with the eBay ads and descriptions... and both keyboards came from the UK.  They were also the ONLY Hing Hons for sale on any of the eBay sites worldwide!  And no one else was interested?  No other bidders?  Zero?  Zilch?  Nada?

I thought all the circuit benders would be falling over each other to get their hands on one!

well, thats probably because £10 plus £5 shipping is a complete rip off for a hing hon, as is £9 includiing shipping for a broken one!  :D

Personally i might pay about £3-£4 maximum for one if i saw it in a charity shop or a bit less at a car boot sale, but you never know what version you'll be getting and i'm not a big fan of paying stupid money for something because of its circuitbending potential, when when apart from that its a piece of crap.  :-\

Once again I'm going to demonstrate my complete ignorance of the value of toys and cheezy keyboards from the 80's and say that a few minutes ago I bought a near mint-condition Casio Rapman on eBay for 25 pounds.  Not a bargain by any definition of the term, but I've seen these sell for 70 pounds on eBay in worn or broken condition (missing keys & buttons), especially when there is a bidding war due to high demand.  This one I just got is one of the cleanest I've seen in almost a year, so to me it was money well spent.

Here's a couple of pics of the one I just bought:

Ugly little bugger, aint he?  As you can see, it's in pretty nice condition and nothing is missing... except for the Casio EM-4131 mini microphone, which shouldn't be too hard to find anyway.  I think it's pretty pathetic how a rare toy like this can easily part a fool (like me) with his hard earned cash!  :D

Just picked up a non-functioning Casio CZ-101 on eBay for 16 pounds.  It looks like the batteries have leaked everywhere and it possibly has been left out in the rain.  It's appearance is very shabby and it is in need of a complete break-down and thorough clean.  It will definitely need to be thoroughly tested for signs of internal damage or shorting.  There might be some rust on the boards and contacts as well, but I have a close friend who is a qualified electronics engineer who will help me find the problem and fix any areas worthy of attention.

It was sold AS IS and for parts only, but it is complete and there are no cracks, no dents, no scrapes and no structural damage at all.  It looks like it was left outside for a few weeks or more with it's batteries still inside and they leaked everywhere and ultimately left it in unusable condition.  The metallic-blue paint finish has partly faded away with signs of acid running along it and the keys, in the grooves, buttons, etc.  Though at the same time, all of the button labels, graphics and logos are in excellent condition. The LCD screen is uncracked and undamaged and all the keys themselves are straight and tight.  It has it's original battery cover and there was even an RA-3 cartridge plugged in it!

But for 16 pounds from eBay, it makes a great source of spare parts for a rebuild or restoration job.  I'd love to buy another and tackle the job of bringing it back to in-store quality!

At the end of the day though, I wish I got it for nothing because that's about as much as it's worth!   :P

cz101 is a very nice synth, i also got mine broken and cheap, managed to fix it  :)
it is worth to clean it out properly, check for shortcuts etc.. i guess you will get it alive again.
for the patch memory, 4 penlites are enough, so you dont have to cary around with the 6 cells
you will not regret if you put some energy in it.. this little synth have a lot of "soundpressure"
great on bass also.. congratulations  :D

Hey thanks :)

It's my first CZ and I'm hoping that someday someone will put a clean, well preserved example up for auction so I can have a second one... with perhaps missing keys, or collapsed buttons, etc.  I think if I can find another low-priced CZ with a nice, clean casing and exterior then I will have a decent restoration project on my hands.

Here's a few pics of the CZ-101 that I paid 16 pounds for:

As you can see, it looks to be very straight and undamaged... but in desparate need of a good clean.  If you look carefully, you can see how the metallic colour has worn off due to the leaking acids though it's nothing really serious looking... it's just mostly cosmetic.  This one has definitely seen better days! :D

I just acquired a Sony Family Studio for Postage costs plus £1.88. I was looking for information on this wonderful piece of kit and found it here, so I thought I'd register and talk about the heathen things I end up doing to it. I got the titler and the edit controller so I reckon I can use bits of one on the other to give a less frankenstein approach . . . . .

C64's seem to fluctuate in price all the time, they go up to about £30 on occasions but most of the time they hover around £5. on ebay that is.

Wow, you can actually buy looped tapes??!!!  I've struggled several times trying to make one out of a normal  cassette.
I reckon you're gonna build some sort of lo-fi tape sampler device. I would with those ingredients. Variable speed pot on the motor etc..etc..

I bought two boxed and cosmetically perfect TB-303's a couple of years ago. The guy couldn't get em to work and suspected the CPU's had died in them, but they powered up so i bought them anyway, as you would. As it turned out, after few dry joint repairs on the sync socket on one of them and a new c-mos memory chip from Roland for the other, they both chirp away just as they should!

The bargain price? £25 for the pair. Ouch.

I sold one and used the proceeds to send the other unit to Robin Whittle for the full Devil Fish treatment, which I can tell you, is a treat.

I'd actually hoped for something analogue on the way there, but figured the days of that kind of bargain were long gone. Everything after that seemed *so* expensive! £1.50 for a Hing Hon!? How dare you!

I also bought my beloved Korg Monopoly for 100 quid from an ex college tutor who preferred the sound of his 01/W and he threw in a VC10 vocoder for £40 extra.

My mate got his SH-101 for £25 from two elderly brothers who shared a semi-detatched house in Crawley which was stuffed full of dusty Hammond organs. I think he was lucky to leave with his life let alone a classic monosynth.

Yeah the Monopoly is one of my favorite synths and quite underrated by people unless you've used one of course - can't see myself ever parting with it.

Those little Speak & Spell modules are so well hidden in their slot I guess people forget they're in there when they sell their Speaks! It's certainly a bonus when one turns up as an added extra - i got 'Vowel Power' as a freebie in one of my Speak purchases. If you do decide to try and get some more I would recommend the E.T. module - it's great - although I paid for that one  ;)

Bought an Akai S3000XL from ebay for £25 as it appeared to be a 120v model. When i opened it up not only did i discover that it appears to have some kind of switched mode power supply with a jumper to set it to 240v, but it also has 32MB RAM and the FX card installed, which is worth about £100 on its own.

if only i hadn't sold my MPC2000XL because i couldn't afford the outputs board or the FX card............... ::)

Sorry LoneStar81, I bought that VC-10 years ago and have long since sold it. A music dealer bought it from me and sent a courier a couple of hundred miles to pick it up, sight unseen (pre-ebay!), so I guess they were pretty excited about it too. It was in great shape and still had it's original goose-neck mic. I do kind of regret selling it sometimes, even now, but these things happen - you can't keep em all...  :-\

got a dw8000 for 150 last month and a bcr2000 for 50.. (euro)
very awsome combination for 200 i think (sold my juno60 to make place !!) and the best is, bcr2000 can also control parameters of my dx7, vz1 cz101, tx81z, and make them a lot more interesting i guess

(the cz101 and the tx81z -both bassmonsters- i got for 45 each, the dx7 was a bit more -60euro- but it had backlight and greymatter upgrade installed :D just bragging about what i got)

Jealous as.. I love cs10's and 15's.... Went and sold both of mine to part finance an ms20 for £600 (about three years ago).. I cannot stand the ms20 but i'm not about to part with it since it's value has more than doubled. I'm always on the lookout for a cs15 if you get bored with it ;)

My own deal of the month.... I just picked up a Kawai K3 for £100

I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing since it's the only one i've ever seen. No idea what year it was made. Late 80's maybe???

Sounds bloody lovely. Like a poor mans ppg wave or something. Lots of Gary Numan-ness in the pad department. Which in my monosynth dominated setup is a joy to have.

I've got a Kawai K1r, which is the rack version... it's the low end of the Kawai spectrum but still well respected for its pads, as all Kawais are.  I got mine about 4 years ago for somthing cheap - it was maybve 30 quid.  I remember the seller asking for extra postage cos he didn't make as much off it as he expected! :P

The samples sound dirty and lo-fi, I hear the K4 was where it was at... so the K3 mustn't be bad at all :D

Certainly a nice sounding synth. I haven't really played about with it yet. Stuck some headphones into it and had a tweak and play. I'm suprised they're as cheap as they are having looked on vintagesynth. $200 is stated as the norm. Someone mentioned the k4 on this thread. I had one of those ages ago. Horrible rompler type thing. It did have a few tricks up it's sleve like a filter (which back when i had it was pretty cool) and some decent sounds but it wasn't what i'd consider to be much of a 'synthesizer'. My second synth was a qs6. Which was also pretty lame. it had loads more sounds but no filter. It did however have some really nice pianos, a decent fx processor and the keyboard was really nice.

According to vintagesynth:

The K3 has been used by Jan Hammer and Patrick O'Hearn.

Go Crocket n' Tubbs!

My most recent acquisition:  I bought a broken Korg Electribe EM-1 for $20 and did the usual fix.  I also added an LTC1799 pitch mod.

I traded that for a dodgy Korg Polysix with a few too many issues to deal with.

I then traded the Korg Polysix for a like new Peavey Valveking 112.

Score!

Boss SE70 effects unit for £20. The person selling it said there was an odd warble on the output but i can't detect it. I suspect they had a flanger turned on or something  ;)

The brilliant Sony HR-MP5 fx unit has the same problem, except when the battery runs out the screen doesn't even come on so it looks like its died. Then after you've replaced the battery you need to press some bizarre selection of buttons as you power to up to reset it, or it still refuses to come on.

I wonder how many have been junked because of that? I know i've got two fully working ones out of it.

yes those are the bargains :D it is a bulky machine but nice, specially with the 808 card.

my latest scores include a hr16 for 20 euro, tr626 for 25, microverb4 for 15 and a tc triple c for 20 eu.
funny thing is a lot of people don't realize most alesis stuff runs on ac, they try it with a dc adapter and then sell it as broken..

@electoyd

Wherever did you find such a haul?
I definitely second Circuitbenders and say you should make some awesome lunettas. If you've not visited before definately look at the lunetta forum on electro music [http://www.electro-music.com/forum/forum-160.html] loads of great simple circuits for those CMOS 4000 and lots of helpful people [if you have visited before then sorry for telling you things you already know]!

thinking I might turn my house into a giant lunetta!  well it almost is already with all that stuff, I havn't even really begun to sort out what is there, there is alot of  the 4000's series spread over 3 anti static (you ground them to mains) cabinets, 48 drawers each cabinet, there is alot of the 7400's series all in tubes as well but I still have to sort them out it is crazy I have never seen so many chips.  The only electronic shop left in my city apart from maplins shut down and they practically gave me it because they had nowhere to put it once shop shut, it had been sitting in their shop for fuck knows how long.  They had no idea really what most of it was they were old railway model railway/radio buffs and they had inherited it from the previous shop owner.  I could have got more anti stat cabinets but ran out of room in my house I was getting the cabinets for £40 each including all the chips in them  ;)

I was at Goodwill and picked up a vtech talking lesson one challenger, whiz kid plus, maybe?, a vtech alphabet apple (2014), and a cheap non-branded toy that said "My first PC tutor" Don't know if that is vtech or not.
