Science museum 'storker-me-tron'. Allows you to listen to far away stuff... Great for vocal takes.
maplins have started selling those again under the name Teleprobe iam looking through one on my login image. they pick up every little sound in a room great for lofi ambient stuff

If it's the same as the circuit in the .zip file linked elsewhere in this thread, then it's not a ring modulator, it really is just a chopper.

bit of a long way round to producing an effect that sounds uncannily like a ring modulator then  ;)
