Where can you buy single unit rack cases?
« on: October 02, 2007, 09:57:53 PM »

Does anyone know where its possible to buy single unit rack cases to use for mounting extra controls for rack synths?

I'm trying to mod a MB33 MkII synth but theres just not enough space in there to mount the amount of new stuff i'd like to put in so i was thinking that it would be cool if i could mount the new controls in another rack unit above or below the main synth rack. Ideally it'd be a single unit case about 3 or 4 inches deep.

Unfortunately i can't find any single unit cases that aren't both really deep and really expensive.  :(

You may want to look into a rack-mounted hard drive enclosure for servers. 1U is 1U, whether it's for music gear or servers.

Yeah, i have had a look at server cases but the only problems are that they are usually outrageously expensive for what they are and they are also very deep in order to accomadate all the motherbioard and other stuff :(

If anyones interested i've found more or less the perfect racks at CPC

http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/Electrical,+Lighting+&+Security/19+Equipment/Cabinet+Rack/VERO/503-232945C/displayProduct.jsp?sku=EN55744

They are still a little deep at 250mm and i could probably do without the vents but the are only £22

These ones are a bit better at 218mm deep and no vents but they are just under £32

And if anyones interested, heres a selection of useful sized rack cases in the UK

http://www.holtbs.co.uk/catalog.html

http://www.bryant-broadcast.co.uk/iqs/dbitemid.361/sfa.view/cpti.651/racks_and_accessories.html

and apparently this bedside table from IKEA is exactly the right size to bolt in some studiospares or maplins rack railing and you've got yourself a nice pine rackmount.

i'd go for the ikea formica things. take the wheels off, and
u get an adjustable shelf..

as for the extra rack unit, exactly what i was tinkin'. but
those things are way too deep. where did the german manuf'
get theirs?(crappy lightweight things)

or use a plain blank alu panel?
