Homemade Boss DS-1
« on: March 03, 2011, 05:06:47 PM »

Hey there.

I have put together a recreation of the boss ds-1 distortion pedal from the original schematic and it works great!

Only thing is, when i try to power it from the mains, it picks up a really annoying mains hum which i can't seem to get rid of...

Any ideas anyone? Would be much appreciated!

James.

It could be any number of things on a homemade pedal, the first thing i'd do is check the jack sockets and everything else is grounded properly, and then check again.

Yeh, that's what I thought, but having trouble tracking down the problem so far...

An electronics friend of mine suggested sticking a couple of caps across the power supply connections (de-coupling??), which has worked a bit, but the hum is still too loud for the circuit to be useful.

You've probably tried this, but have you tried a different power supply?

Sorry raise this topic from the grave, but if you're still having this problem, you may want to check this out http://beavisaudio.com/projects/Huminator/index.htm It's just a small little circuit that you can add to the DC jack on your pedal or build it stand alone (as in the article) that gets rid of hum.

Nice one Dylan!

I never got round to sorting it out, been busy with other things so just had it running off a battery.

I'll definitely try that out :-)

No problem. I installed a bastardized version of that circuit into a pedal I made and it worked fairly well. Depending on the amount of buzz you're getting, try different cap values.
