Boss DR110 internal DIN sync
« on: May 05, 2011, 10:24:15 PM »

This one was a bit of a tight squeeze, but i finally managed to get proper internal DIN sync built into a Boss DR110.

Normally when you add DIN sync to a DR110 you end up in a situation where you press play on your master device, the DR110 starts in sync, but when you press stop on the master and the DR110 stops, it doesn't reset to the start of the bar again. This means when you then press play again on the master, the DR110 just starts from where it stopped playing. You can get around this by pressing stop on the master clock, then pressing stop on the DR110 to reset it, then you have to press play on the DR110 to arm the sync again before pressing play on the master clock. As you can imagine, its not the ideal way of working.  ::)

I've spent the last couple of days figuring out how to work around this and have finally managed it by hacking some logic onto the run/stop DIN sync pin. Now when you press stop on the master the DR110 stops, automatically resets itself and re-arms the play to wait for another start signal. Nice!  ;)

UPDATE: We now have some internal DIN sync kits available for the DR110 at http://www.circuitbenders.co.uk/forsale/DR110sync.html

very nice.
what does 'hacking the logic' involve? a 2 count reset thingy or something?

do you reckon you could get a tr626 to send(receive?) dinsync? it has tapesync,
and i hear they are quite similar.

When you press the play or stop button on the DR110 you get a 5v pulse across the button contacts.

I used a 4053 switch wired up to the run pin of the dinsync socket so that when the dinsync run pin goes high the DR110 play button also goes high and the stop button goes low, which starts the DR110 playing as if you'd just pressed the play button. When you press stop on the master clock and the dinsync run pin goes low, the opposite happens so the DR110 play button goes low and the stop button goes high, which resets the machine back to the start.

by the way i m modding an ace tone fr-1 at the moment, my dream is to give it sync24. i tought it could be easy as it is an ancient roland drummachine after all, but now i think it's sequenser might have an other resolution..
any idea's / experience on acetone rhythm machines ?
maybe i just end up with triggering its internal sounds with my tr626, but it would be nice to have the sequencer involved somehow :-\

sweet 808ish sounds it has btw  :-*

Look for details of the Roland TR77 / Bentley Rhythm Ace FR8L. Theres some info here http://www.adambaby.com/studiotech_TR-77.html and i'd suspect the FR1 is very similar. Theres also some info on the burnkit2600 site.

Do you have a FR1 service manual?

ok thanks Paul !
that's a handy link you gave.
no service manual, but i do have schematics of a simmilar machine..
so far i only made it 19 inch unit
the sound modding will be a bit trial&error, but at least there is a trimmer for bass drum decay,
wich i think is the most important parameter  ;D BOOOOOOooooommmm
