The tuning trimmer probably controls the clock speed of the synth circuit. If it goes out of a useful range or isn't working then you might not get any sound. Bridging it will just give you zero resistance, which might make the thing produce sound depending on how its setup, but it won't be in tune with anything else.
Just replace the trimmer. It'll say its value on it somewhere.
