Casio VL Tone - No Sound
« on: December 25, 2013, 06:11:12 PM »

On my Casio VL-5, I've tried to adjust the faulty tuning knob and the sound stopped working. The display still shows and the rhythm still sounds. I've had it apart and can see nothing wrong at the tuning knob. I'm guessing I've physically damaged the tuning knob.  Can I repair it? Get a new one? Or can I short around it to effect repair? Thanks.  Jim Cronburg

The tuning trimmer probably controls the clock speed of the synth circuit. If it goes out of a useful range or isn't working then you might not get any sound. Bridging it will just give you zero resistance, which might make the thing produce sound depending on how its setup, but it won't be in tune with anything else.

Just replace the trimmer. It'll say its value on it somewhere.

Thanks very very much for the reply.  I just looked at the trimmer from the top of the circuit board. I'll have to take the board fully out of the case to see how the trimmer is attached. Where would I get one?

That depends exactly what kind it is, but virtually any decent online components seller should be able to sell you a replacement for most values. Or possibly a local electronics store if its something very common.
