Yamaha DD-10. My first bend!
« on: February 20, 2007, 08:00:41 AM »

Hello all,
After months of staring at my dismantled DD10 I'm finally going to have a go at bending it. Although it's my first bend, I (think I) know the basics of soldering, resistors, LEDs etc. and I (think I) know to generally stay away from the circuit near the battery supply.
But, I'm a little paranoid that while searching for bends I might fry the 'CPU' chip, as I don't know how to tell it apart from a RAM or ROM chip. The circuit board has a total of 5 chips; two of which have 8 pins and are tiny. One has 16 pins. One has 28 pins. And the biggest (with closer spacing between pins) has 64 pins.
Any advice on what to try bending and what to leave well alone would be most useful! In fact, any advice or suggestions with regards to this machine and it's bend points and danger areas would be hugely welcomed.

Thanks in advance!
Nathan

Scrap that, my first post was a bit daft, ended up just diving in and didn't wreck anything (yet). So far found a couple of cool filter effects, will let you know if I find anything else. Would love to find a pitch shift in there somewhere......
Cheers
Nathan (from Brighton, by the way)

Pitch shifts never happen with yamahas, unless you want to get into a world of hurt with crystals and ceramic resonators.

you can try replacing the crystal with a variable oscillator
A simple IC (74HC14) can generate frequency up to 20MHz

http://www.massmind.org/images/www/hobby_elec/e_ckt29.htm
play with the R and C values...
Desolder Crystal/Resonator and connect the oscillator on one of the pins where the crystal was.
You have to try which one works.

Hi,

Anybody got starting points out there? I've been trying a bit but only found (loads of) scary crash points... A few guidelines would be more than appreciated...

Thanks in advance!
