digital telephone answering machine

i got one from the recycling shop, i tought it might be a nice bender/ lo fi sampler
it can digitaly record up to 20 minutes or so, and has various female instruction voices.

it seems like all the sampling info and firmware is in one square 80 pin chip

unfortunately it only crashes when i poke around inside  :-\

has anyone got experience in bending this kind of stuff ?
it would be so great if one could mangle all the messages inside... :P

hoever it remains a nice answering machine anyway...

I've tried a few answering machines and achieved absolutely nothing.

Had a few glitches but they are always chance events and can't be repeated............ oh, and a lot of crashing :(

on a side note, i picked up a tape answering machine the other day. i hear you can do fun things with them.

i noticed, btw, when i phoned "myself" with my mobile/cell phone (to try out the answering machine)
that speaking in the mobile on a close distance to the answering machine, causes a nice digital feedback
delay.... so i imagine if you could control tape speed on an analog answering machine, it could be
very nice :P  remains a lo fi and expensive delay machine : you pay per minute ;D
but nice to imagine the path of the signal...it maybe even runs true a sattalite... real space echo!

i tried something similair a few weeks ago. what i did was fone a freinds mobile from my mobile, and hold them 2gether. u get this great noise from both fones and loads of feedback. was cool.

The cell phone delay effect is excellent, particularly when both phones are on speakerphone.

Not related, I also recently picked up an old answering machine.  I haven't looked at it too closely yet, but the enormous tape reels look pretty promising.

The answering machine I got a few weeks ago has turned out to be a goldmine for performing, though I haven't done anything to it aside from wire an output jack.
It's an old reel to reel job with what looks like 1/4inch tape, made by Phonemate some time in the mid 70's.  The reels are located on the outside of the machine and can be scratched like a record, reversed, slowed down or sped up manually.
Needless to say, this sounds unbelievable with a grainy 30 year old phone message.
