cds cell mounting / housing ?
« on: February 10, 2008, 06:36:41 PM »

hi, i am new here, i have a question for my first post . i don't want to sound like a poser , please bear with me . i have
built 3 cds theremins and have mounted 2 cds cells on the dash of my
volvo, using odds and ends as housings . i am not really happy with
this approach. the quarter inch jack housings don't have a cover so they
collect dust , others look homemade and wiggle a little bit . my
current project is a dual apc with built in echo and 10 watt amp . it
all fits into a really nice looking wooden speaker box from the early
80's . for this one the aesthetic end of the deal is top priority . i
have stainless panels for the switches and pot mounts , but i cant
figure out a practical cds mount solution and there will be four of
them on the top of the box. the wood is about 1/4 inch thick , i need
to find a housing that will be secure and have a lens on the top .
any ideas ? i figured this would be the place to ask . thanks in
advance ! petey twofinger .

I'm assuming you mean a light dependant resistor / LDR when you say CDS.

I'd be interested in an answer to thsi question as well. How do people mount LDR cells?

I'n the past i've just drilled a hole slightly smaller than the cell, expoxied the cell to the underside of the hole and then either pushed a circular bit of clear plastic into the hole above the LDR or more often, just filled the hole with epoxy resin as it tends to harden with a fairly opaque finish that lets just enough light through. Unfortunately it does tend to go slightly yellow over time.

In my experience the big chunky LDR's with clear plastic housinga are easier to work with and look at lot better than the tiny ones.
