Yamaha RX21
« on: April 05, 2008, 07:34:16 PM »

Just bought one of these and planning to bend it, seen some videos on youtube that seem to show it bends well.

Anyone here have any pointers or specifics on this drum machine?

Updated URL with some pictures of what I've soldered on so far.

Very little room to mount any controls inside so it looks like i'll have to run the wires out to an external box somehow..

I'm thinking you might benefit from a camera with autofocus  ;)

Good job though, i was wondering about the RX21, someone told me the bends weren't as good as the RX17............... or was that the RX120 i'm thinking of?

hmmmm

My camera phone's definitely not the best tool for the job but its all I have unfortunately!  Can't blame it all on the phone though, some of it is my jittery hands..

I can't comment on the other drum machines as this is the only one I've ever touched.. I am intrigued to know the family connections though.

For example in my RX21 there's a socketed chip that is manufactured by Yamaha but looks to my uneducated eye like an EEPROM - I wondered if that's where the samples are stored and if its possible to replace/hack it somehow.

Seems hard to find datasheets etc on the web tho :(

EEPROMS are usually fairly small, often 8-pin devices.  The sound ROM would be about a 28-pin or 32-pin chip.  The number might give some clue to its capacity, or you might get something from the manual.  In any case, nearly all mask-programmed ROMs, EPROMs and Flash memories follow the JEDEC standard for pin layout.

Whether or not you can understand what's in the ROM is another matter ;-)

Ahh ok thanks very much for that info Gordonjcp, I guess its more likely to be a ROM then!  JEDEC info is handy to know when researching :)
