The 'Name That Toy' Thread
« on: November 07, 2008, 06:12:49 AM »

I've been wracking my brain for two months now over the name of that circular toy with the crank which you pull, and there's an arrow in the center that spins to one of the surround objects, and then says something about it.  I've usually seen them with barnyard animals.

Once we establish the name, is this a truly electronic toy, or even bendable?  Me and my friend recorded a song in which is was playing/scratching it like a turntable, so I wouldn't think it's a chip-based toy like most.  But then how is it saying words?

Have a listen to the song yourself.

This is perhaps 6 years old, but kinda the context I plan to circuit bend in, minus the joke of it.  Fun little indie-pop-psych-folk gems.

It's called a "see n' say." I had a lion king version when I was little...

http://www.howstuffworks.com/see-say.htm This page explains in depth how they work. Apparently it's a lot like a gramaphone/record player... Wow, I really didn't know that. I can see how your friend would have been "scratching" it... that sounds awesome.  Wouldn't be bendable though, due to the lack of any electronics... no batteries even :P

Dang, not much of a project, but if I find one I think I'll put in a mic at close proximity and a 1/4" output.  I wouldn't need a resistor or pot in between, right?

Ok ppl. I have a new one for ya!

WTF is this ?? I need to know! Supposed to have many different sounds and theremin like control.. I'm thinking it might be the heart of a toy drum kit because of the "arms," but I'm unsure.

I had one of those but never got around to bending it.  It's a Discovery Kids Dj something or other.  The arms have somewhat sluggish light sensors.
