Circuit bent devices used by popular musicians/bands?
« on: October 07, 2009, 08:49:56 AM »

Alright, so for my public speaking class I've got to give an informative speech on something I'm very familiar with... guess what I picked.

I've got most of my speech outlined and will be showing and demonstrating plenty, but one thing I'd like to throw in is some examples of circuit bending in pop culture, or at least some well known bands the class would be familiar with that use bent devices.

I know NIN used a bent SK-1, Beck used a speak and spell live at some point and DEVO uses bent instruments live from time to time, but if anybody knows of a nice list somewhere or could throw me a few more examples I can provide for my class I'd much appreciate it :p My presentation is Thursday.

I know plenty of bands that are less known that use bent devices, so I'm really looking for more popular bands the class would have heard of.

I've built stuff for, or stuff i've built has been used by:

The Chemical Brothers
REM
Bloc Party
Plump DJ's
Raiden (renegade hardware / Off Key records)
Twisted Records (Hallucinogen, Shpongle, OTT, Younger Brother etc etc)
Jacknife Lee (U2 producer, remixer, Compulsion)
Howie Miura (Island / Def Jam)
Noise inc
Sweet Noise
matrix22 (12 Inch Thumpers, Brick records)
Groove Criminals (future music cover DVD samples etc)
Kutchi

I'm currently modding a Poly800 for some guy from Warp records who's producing the next Duran Duran album!

What'd you make for Bloc Party and REM, Paul? (out of curiosity, and any tracks I could hear it on?) Those I hadn't heard before. You've got quite a reputation - it must feel good to have your things being used by so many big names :P

Lofi Ninja: I think we all know Aphex Twin uses some bent equipment, note I did say popular bands my class would recognize  ;)  I remember that video, I believe it was on getlofi.com... It was called "data moshing" but was that actually circuit bending in any way?

I was told by Jacknife Lee that he managed to shoehorn some circuitbent kit onto both the last REM album and whatever Bloc Party album it was that he produced. I think i sold him an Alesis HR16 and some kind of Casio SA, and i might have modded a Yamaha RX8 for him as well but i don't recall. Theres an article where he mentions using the Alesis with Bloc Party here http://remixmag.com/artists/electronic/remix_bloc_party_album/index1.html .I've not heard the last REM album so i don't know about that one.

I guess there might be some Speak & XXXX stuff on the latest chemical brothers album but again, i've not heard it.

If you can hear any circuitbent sounds on anything on Def Jam theres a distinct possibility that they were from the gargantuan load of samples i supplied to them. Hearing a sound i produced on a Rhianna track, now that would be weird  ;)

If your class don't know Aphex Twin then something is very wrong with the world you live in.. I just asked my class, and only 2 out of 17 didn't know Aphex Twin..

Twisted Records (Hallucinogen, Shpongle, OTT, Younger Brother etc etc)

If you check the DVD of Twisted's 10 year anniversery, there's a video of Simon in his studio showing off the VSS-300 you've modded.

It's youtubeable too.

Dont know if I mentioned that before... but if i didn't, i have now.

Yeah, it's been in a thread here before somewhere :P I love that video.  Simon seems like such a genuine guy I'd like to get to know.. Been a huge fan of Shpongle for awhile, and hallucinogen a bit.

In that video I love how he continuously says "I've got this reeeverb, got sort of a lovely big reverrrb."

Damn, I wish I would have been here before your presentation. Mike Patton, multi-instrumentalist genius and vocalist for Faith No More, Fantomas, Tomahawk, etc (there's even pics of him fucking around with bent instruments on casperelectronics along with a vid of him talking about circuit bending). Also on that site is the circuit bent speak and spell Danny Elfmann of Oingo Boingo uses.

That wonderful thing casperelectronics put together for him is incredibly impressive, with the little keyboard and all.

I did get an A on the presentation (I even used a video projector to open up an SK-1 and show them some point to point bends).

The next class period this guy comes in and tells me "Yeah I went home and uh, I blew up this keyboard of mine from my childhood, it just started smoking when I was connecting stuff." I felt a bit bad :P

Hahaha! Yeah, but you inspired him to start bending.

I fried my first thing too. Yeah, it kinda made me a little mad, but it just made me all the more determined to get something to work right. The next thing I got my hands on wound up being pretty freaking awesome:

Dave,

I am have been talking to Alan about that MK2 you modded. Apparently, the tone is one semitone out. Can you drop me a line so that we can have a chat about it.

I am the guy that created the HAWK mod and I would like to help Al out as much as possible.

Cheers,

Mike.
