ive got an old tube tv lying around which i am going to be throwing away, but i want to take the tube out and use it to build a distortion pedal.
has anybody ever tried this before? can the tube from a tv be used for this?
and does anybody know of any schematics for tube distortion? im sure i will find one but its worth asking.

Not really.  TV tubes aren't designed to exhibit much gain, and you need a few thousand volts on the anode which is likely to make your output circuit quite exciting.

You might be able to get away with using one of the brightness or focus anodes as the "output" anode with only a few hundred volts on it, but I don't know if it would work well.

Why bother when EF86s are so cheap anyway? ;-)

i dont really know too much about electronics yet, im still at the stage of following schematics and parts lists. thanks for that info.

Carefully, since the phosphor dust is a bit poisonous and if the tube breaks the wrong way then glass goes everywhere.

When your bin is empty, put the tube in a cardboard box face down, carefully put it into the bottom of a wheely bin, and then with the lid as closed as possible try to break the neck off with something like a spade or other heavy long-handled implement.  Wear gloves.  Then fold up the box and tape it shut.
