What the hell is this tool called?
« on: April 15, 2007, 06:02:50 PM »

Either i'm being really stupid or i'm missing something fundamental.

Does anyone know what the tool is called that you use to tighten up the nuts on minijack sockets? The round nuts that have a screwdriver slot on either side of the actual socket hole so you'd need a flat bladed screwdriver with the middle of the blade missing to tighten it. I'm sure you must be able to buy screwdriver bits like this but i can't seem to find any. I do have a few 'spanner bits' which would do the job if i could find any big enough.

I've ended up having to make my own tool out of a piece of steel tube with the end filed to fit in the slots on the nut.

surely you can buy something like this?

Hi - I have no idea what the tool is called.  I know the type of nuts you mean though, I have sometimes seen them referred to as 'slotted ring nuts' otherwise they have only been referred to as just 'fixing nuts' which isn't much help.  Googling slotted ring nuts provides little help either  :-\

According to google 'slotted ring nuts' are something to do with motorbikes, or at least thats as much as i can gather.

What do other people use to tighten up these nuts?

It can't be only me that hasn't been let into the secret, or maybe it is and my paranoia is justified  :D

I just use my fingers or some hemostats.

Hemostats are surgical needle nose pliers, much slimmer than standard NN pliers.

I don't have the mad skills to make my own doohickey.

I use pliers to tighten these buggers, half of them aren't even slotted as well.

I've googled all day but can't find anything like it, to find out what it is. The problem is, I don't know what to call it to search for it, but then if I knew what it was called, I wouldn't be searching for it. ::)

Cheers, Graham

maybe we should have a competition to name the tool if there isnt one out there?

I don't think thats right, if you're talking about this thing.

Itsn't that designed so a shaft passes up through the gap at the end and two circular prongs point downwards to engage in a couple of holes on the nut? I don't think that would work on these nuts.

Unless you actually use one of those for this job and i'm completely wrong?

When you look at the design of both tools they are similar. The only difference is that the one you posted is in a socket application. It's the same with normal wrenches. Some are flat, others are in sockets but share the same name......

You know what we call it a "Socket Lock Nut Wrench for Audio Jack Socket" or short SLNWAJS ;D
