A.I.Project -Yamaha DD8-
« on: November 15, 2011, 02:36:06 AM »

Hi!  :)
"This is the Part 2 of the link below :

http://www.circuitbenders.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,2029.msg13085.html#new

Pitch mod:
On the DD series  the pitch works differently from the common "pitch bend" we are used to find on other lo-fi devices where usually the pitch and the tempo change simultaneously.

Yamahas DD have 2 different pitch mod (i did it on DD6/8/11)

Pitch shift-The octave goes from hi to low without alterate the tempo-

Pitch bend-Both octaves and tempo change simultaneously-

I've  divided the line out of the ltc1799 in 2 wires and connected the 2 wires on 2 different points:
One controls the Octave and  is usually a green/brown Capacitor next to a 2nd small blue xtall
(note that I've soldered my wire to cap as the 2nd Xtall was too close to the board)
The other bend point is on 1 of the legs of the xtall
The  cap controls the octave the xtall the tempo
Connect the 2 wires to it and add all the required components.
On the DD8 i have it with 2 switches and a potentiometer.
(this mod should also work on SK5 and probably other devices)

Beat randomizer:
There are few points on the ic1 that can be work out with lfo I've  chose the more Representative 1 and installed.
I added to it on/off switch+PBotton.
I've also added 3 bends related to it,that are not sound changing.
The all 3 with switch and PBotton.

Sound bends:
Those are located on the ic3 and are easy to find.
I've chosen a combination of 6X6 and mounted them on 2 rotaryS once again with switches and PBottons in order to increase the "userfriendliness"
I didn't do anything really technical but  just  select those of my taste.

Bass & Bleeps:
There are plenty of body contact on DD8/6
Those can be work out with a Potentiometer to fade the volume
I've chosen 5:
1 with lower octave
Potentiometer/switch/PBotton
4 with high octave
Rotary/potentiometer/switch/PBotton

Modulation:
"A Vactrol is the marriage between an LED  and an LDR"
I always look for some and connect them inside to give the wobblesound-movement.
then i  expand them using switches/PBottons/and potentiometers in order to control the depth.

Those 5 modifications have been fine tuned with resistors and everything needed in order to have a reliable lo-finess.
There are different way to connect bends and is always good to give it a go your way/your taste...
DD 6/8 seems to be quite strong and are a good field to experiment a b..just be careful to not catch strange voltages.....
Stay on the right side of the Board and DO NEVER poke around after the  voltage regulator (TR1) if you don't wanna fry it!

Enjoy :)

Thanks for the pitch bend tip!
Going to have to try that.
How low can it go via this method?

I'm not sure i'm following the pitch bit there. I assume DD's have one component labelled as 'xtal' that sets the clock speed of the main cpu and therefore the whole system, and another xtal that sets the clock speed of the sample playback. Change the first clock speed and the tempo plus pitch will change, change the second and just the pitch will change?

Couldn't you have a switch that sends the LTC clock to one or the other? Although i guess that wouldn't work if you have to actually remove whatever the xtal is. Ideally you'd need two LTC's.

Or am i thinking about this completely wrong?

Nice write up  ;)

Ok:..2 xtall 2 different functions(on DD 6/7-8/11/12) small one pitch,Big one BPM you can choose what you want to activate...2 cables 2 switches... first on=pitch shift. second on=slow BPM.
 Both on=Pitch and BPM.
Other (better) experiment=2 ltc1799 one for each Xtall....never tried but if "1+1=2" it should work.
 ;)

Big hugs bending brothers...

when you slow the tempo right down do you get a noticeable lag between hitting a pad and the sound actually triggering? I'm wondering it its actually controlling the BPM or the clock speed of the whole system.

No there are no delays..all works touch sensitive as normal.
I halso have a Yamaha RX17(i'm waiting a B for that one cos i wanna do it very well..any advice link ecc would be appreciate)..apparently that one z-got problems with ltc....can this be the solution?
